Yes, I used Xorg-6.7.0 source. I didn't really patch it, but managed to
remove a maximum of unneeded elements by not building them.
My only modifications where to the build system.
Also, I didn't install a window manager locally, just the minimum needed
to run the X server and rdesktop.

I didn't build X on the target system. I used a more powerfull Athlon-64
machine most of the time, with a 10000 RPM hard-disk.
I don't really know your constraints but if the machine has trouble
running a standard X11 distribution, forget about compiling one on it.
Your best bet is to use a separate build machine or pre-built binaries.
