L?gende: Maiden and the Moon

No disrespect to Neil Armstrong, but really, the first person to ever
land on the Moon is a Chinese and her name is Chang'e (??). The
story of her ascension to the Moon after escaping from the tyranny of
her husband Houyi (??) with a magic gift from the Western Heavenly
Mother has been passed down for thousands of years, so it must be
true! (Did you wonder why China called its first lunar-orbiting
spacecraft Chang'e 1? Now you know.)

All joking aside, the time to celebrate the brightest full moon of
the year and Autumn harvest is once again upon us. This year's Mid-
Autumn Festival (???, Zhongqiu Jie) falls on October 3. Have you
got your lanterns and mooncakes ready? Your local Asian markets
should have plenty of mooncakes on shelves by now. The traditional
mooncake with white-lotus paste and single yolk is still the
yummiest, just watch out for how many calories you will be taking in.
(Hint: many.)
Happy 60th Anniversary, PRC!

Histoire: October 1, 2009 will mark the 60th Anniversary of the
founding of the People's Republic of China. Much has happened in the
past 60 years, and China has slowly, if unevenly, become one of the
world stage's biggest player. The government is planning a grand
celebration that is bigger and more impressive than the Opening
Ceremony of the 2008 Olympics. (See Boston Globe's amazing collection
of PRC's 60th Anniversary celebration rehearsal pictures.) Of course
we will be following the festivities on our blog, but meanwhile, you
can catch up on the history of how PRC becomes the power that it is
today. hina
